When I first spotted this tweed coat in the corner of my beloved Zara, I was instantly drawn to it. However, with my hands already full with my other findings, I was faced with a decision, and somehow I managed to walk away from it.

Immediately after I got home, the coat started to haunt me – non-buyers remorse kicked in. Throughout the week I kept thinking about it – obsession kicked in. That’s when I knew I had to go back for it, and I’m so glad that I did. The always-classic tweed, the epaulettes, the gold buttons, the length…I love it all.

Mixed textures and a deep crimson color are the focus of this polished-casual look. By styling it with a simple black tank, I was able to play with the bottom half and wear faux-leather leggings topped off with over-the-knee real-leather boots. I know it’s a lot of leather, but I’m a fan of contrasting aesthetics (in this case, biker babe meets Coco Chanel) to create a look that’s uniquely “me.”

So let this be a fashion lesson to all of you: if you love something, walk away from it. If you’re still thinking about it a week later, you owe it to yourself and to stylish people everywhere to make it yours.

Black on Black on Black

As the unofficial uniform of NYC, all black is a common sight on the streets. How to stand out amongst the sea of darkness, you ask? It’s all about mixed fabrications, posh accessories and a jolt of contrast color. When you get the details right, the head-to-toe look goes from basic and boring to undeniably chic. I actually wore this on the red-eye flight from LA (gloves and beanie were stashed in my purse) and walked around New York all morning in it before we could get into our hotel. Now that’s Black Magic.

The fall-weather glimpse we got a few weeks ago was definitely short lived. This past week and weekend, LA saw temps back up in the 90s…much to my dismay. But, rather than sitting inside with the AC cranked up enough to warrant a sweater, blanket and cup of hot cocoa, I decided to bring out a bright summer-y dress for its (most-likely) final appearance of 2012.

With its easy, Grecian-style silhouette and asymmetrical lines, this dress is always a winner for sunny days and warm nights. However, it’s the strikingly rich color that really makes it stand out. Soaked in an almost-aqua hue that’s anything but bland, the shade of this frock projects optimism and confidence…making it an instant pick-me-up. A few Midas touches are all I need to finish this effortless ensemble; I chose a hammered cuff with draped fringe chains and glimmering gold flat sandals. The result? A carefree look that revels in the endless summer.

How would you style this dress? Let me know in the comments!

Smooth Transition

On a final summer escape to beautiful Dana Point, I embraced the official transition into fall by mixing light neutral tones with rich navy. By pairing a burnout tank with a lightweight blazer and satin jogger shorts, I’m able to bridge the gap between the seasons while still looking resort-ready. Open-toe booties are also a secret weapon for the not-quite-fall weather. They look more covered-up but still keep you cool and show off the pedi you’re maintaining. The trick is to be comfortable (after all, it is vacay) but look put together. How did I do? Let me know in the comments!

Def(initely) Leopard

Finding and purchasing these shorts is one of those shopping moments I remember vividly. I told my friend over the phone, “I just bought high-waisted leopard shorts that needed to be in my life.” What can I say? When the clothes speak to me, I have to listen. If I don’t, it’s like a slap in the face to the fashion gods, and upsetting them is not especially high on my to-do list.

This look is all about mixing textures and proportions. The high-low top (also lovingly referred to as “the mullet”), short shorts and ridiculously tall Litas (which I also like to call “The Fashion Girl’s Doc Martens”) play off each other to make an aesthetically interesting balance. By starting with the statement-making leopard shorts and building the outfit around them, I’m able to work multiple trends at once without overdosing.

What do you think of this look? Share in the comments below. Unless you don’t like it, then I think I’d rather you keep your comments to yourself…

Top: Lush. Shorts: Yaya Nom de Plume. Sunglasses: Gucci. Boots: Jeffrey Campbell.

Teal Love

While I wouldn’t classify my taste as particularly colorful, there are certain hues, teal being one of them, that I’m drawn to time and time again. I even convinced my husband once to paint a wall in a clearly elegant teal-ish color named “Mermaid Treasure.” Looking back, I can’t say it was the best choice, but it goes to show that my eye can’t help but gravitate towards the vibrant shades of blue/green bliss.

When working a separates look around a color, I like to keep the rest of the pieces in the neutral zone so it really stands out. Since the bandage skirt is obviously fitted, I balance it with a borrowed-from-the-boys button-down and buckled booties so the look isn’t overly sexy. For me, it’s all about creating that contrast between flirty and casual to get it right for all-day style.

And just because she’s so damn cute…a bonus Zoey shot.

Hat Trick

Summertime means days spent outdoors, making it perfect for pulling out those oversized floppy hats from your closet. Some have an aversion to hats because they make such a statement — that happens to be the same reason why I love them. To avoid a look that’s too Kentucky Derby for the everyday, style it with a playful romper and lace-up boots. Piling on an armful of jewelry is always a chic finish.

Romper: Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent. Hat: Deena & Ozzy. Sunglasses: Gucci. Watch: GUESS. “OBSESSED” bracelet: BCBGeneration. Shoes: Deena & Ozzy.

Special guest star: Zoey the poodle
