Everyone deserves a dress-down day once in a while. There’s no better way to ease into the weekend than with casual jeans and a tee. The key to looking fab when you do it? As always, it’s in the details.

Insider Tips:
1. Opt for an embellished tee or add a statement necklace to a plain one.
2. Instead of flats, try a pair of (reasonably) comfortable heels.
3. Lipstick. Always wear lipstick. Even if you skip everything else in the makeup department, you can always count on lipstick to make you look and feel glamorous.

With all the back to school buzz that’s been in the air, I couldn’t help but put together my own school-girl inspired look. While it’s not a plaid skirt and knee-high stockings, there’s something very prep-school-meets-street-style about the final product. Gold studs and leather shorts put my own personal spin on the trend and take it from elementary school to master class. Let’s just say if we were on the Upper East Side, I’d be giving Miss Queen B, Blair Waldorf, a run for her reign on the steps of the Met. Studs beat headbands every time.

Feeling the back to school trend? Style your own look and share with me on Twitter/Instagram @herwritemind. Can’t wait to see!

An early evening outing to the Griffith Observatory followed by dinner in Los Feliz called for a multitasking outfit that was both comfortable and cute. My solution? An oversized Zara jacket (which I lovingly refer to as my lab coat), wet-look leggings and flats with a splash of leopard print.

During the nearly mile-long hike from the car to the building, I was thoroughly grateful for my choice of footwear. Remember, sometimes practical is the most chic.

As the unofficial uniform of NYC, all black is a common sight on the streets. How to stand out amongst the sea of darkness, you ask? It’s all about mixed fabrications, posh accessories and a jolt of contrast color. When you get the details right, the head-to-toe look goes from basic and boring to undeniably chic. I actually wore this on the red-eye flight from LA (gloves and beanie were stashed in my purse) and walked around New York all morning in it before we could get into our hotel. Now that’s Black Magic.

Wandering through Central Park as a light mist fell around us, it felt much more like autumn in New York rather than winter, but neither of us was complaining. Shades of burnt orange covered the ground in the form of recently-fallen leaves, and my outfit of choice made an unexpected but fitting addition to the surroundings. Pops of bright green grass brought a jolt of energy to create a setting rich with natural beauty and inspiration — the perfect setting for a bundled-up stroll through New York’s playground.

All Black & Blue

It’s finally starting to feel like fall in LA, and I couldn’t be happier. I tend to get much more creative with my looks when the temps drop a little since i can add more and more layers into the mix. Scarf and sweater weather is my happy place. Today I debuted a few pieces that have been patiently waiting in my closet for a few weeks — a black and navy cardigan from Kirna Zabête for Target and black plush leggings from rag & bone jean. I’m already obsessed with both and I know they’ll be staples in the upcoming months. The cardi is finished with leather buttons (probably faux since it was rather budget friendly) and a sheer woven panel down the spine to give it that extra detail that really makes it stand out. The leggings are extremely soft and super comfortable. They’re skinny enough to tuck into even my short fold-down boots which is a huge plus. By keeping the rest of my look all black, the navy contrast really pops which is what I love most about this look.

What do you think of it? Let me know in the comments!

Sweater: Kirna Zabête for Target. Pants: rag & bone / jean. Bag: Rebecca Minkoff. Boots: Luxury Rebel.

Detail Oriented

When I’m feeling especially casual on a hot summer’s day, I turn to sheer, lightweight fabrics that move freely. There’s nothing worse than being hot and feeling constricted by your clothing. In order to keep the look more posh and less like a slight step up from a mumu, you’ve got to pay special attention to the details. In this look, flat gold buttons, a metal heel plate and coral lips make a statement of put-together chic, while a kitschy phrase bracelet, comfy jogger shorts and a tied-up blouse exude laid-back relaxation. When it comes down to it, it’s really the gold shine throughout that defines this look, proving that if you mind the details, you can look like a fashion expert and feel like you’re in your pajamas…perfection.
