Wandering through Central Park as a light mist fell around us, it felt much more like autumn in New York rather than winter, but neither of us was complaining. Shades of burnt orange covered the ground in the form of recently-fallen leaves, and my outfit of choice made an unexpected but fitting addition to the surroundings. Pops of bright green grass brought a jolt of energy to create a setting rich with natural beauty and inspiration — the perfect setting for a bundled-up stroll through New York’s playground.

7 DAYS OF GIFTS
Your Guide to Flawless Gifting for Him and Her

December is officially upon us! While many retailers now start their Christmas marketing in the middle of October (even before Halloween!), my cue to kick the holiday shopping into gear is seeing DEC on the calendar.

As a self-proclaimed Proud Gifter, I get a legitimate thrill out of finding just the right gifts for everyone on my list—the gifts that they really, truly LOVE getting. (Side note: I’m also a willing recipient of said gifts.)

Since scouring malls and websites in search of the perfect gifts can be quite time-consuming, I took it upon myself to do the work for you in this “7 Days of Gifts” series. You can thank me later.

Every day this week, I’ll feature smile-inducing, reasonably-priced gift ideas for the near and dear on your shopping list.

DAY 2: SIBLINGS
Under $50

Brothers and sisters can often be the hardest to shop for (at least for me). I want to get them something they will actually use, but wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves. My gifting philosophy is that there always has to be a little indulgence. Otherwise, where’s the fun? Show them they deserve a special treat with these can’t-fail picks.

Tell Me ‘Bout It, Stud

Whether you love ’em or hate ’em, studs are having a major moment right now, and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Once reserved for goth chicks and pit bulls, these days studs can be spotted everywhere from your local Trader Joe’s to A-list red carpet events.

As a pro-stud dresser, I’m pleased with the studded high-fashion offerings that designers are currently putting out. Studs automatically add that bad-ass vibe that’s necessary for certain days; they’re a way to say, “Don’t f*$# with me,” while flashing a confident smile and still minding your Ps & Qs.

In order to get studs right, it’s important to balance them with softer pieces. You want to walk the “approachable yet not-afraid-to-stand-up-for-yourself” line. I made this hard-edged studded jacket work by pairing it with a floaty chiffon-back tank and black harem pants.

It has a certain something to it, don’t you think?

Jacket: Beulah. Tank: BCBGMAXAZRIA. Pants: Nation LTD. Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell.

Summer Leather

Discontent with the constraint of the warm temperatures, I felt the need to rebel with lots of black leather. I can’t help but get antsy towards the end of a season. All the cozy sweaters and tall boots are calling me from store windows, magazine pages and my closet, yet the weather is definitely not ready to embrace fall.

In order to satisfy my leather craving while avoiding heat stroke, I opted for a sleeveless tank and a moto vest. Leather-like leggings and windblown messy hair prove my commitment to the hardcore biker look. Ok, the messy hair might be a result of hitting snooze one too many times in the morning, but it still works.

Is anyone else ready for sweater weather, or is it just me?

Vest: Coalition. Tank: Elizabeth & James. Leggings: See You Monday. Sunglasses: D&G. Shoes: BCBGMAXAZRIA.

Teal Love

While I wouldn’t classify my taste as particularly colorful, there are certain hues, teal being one of them, that I’m drawn to time and time again. I even convinced my husband once to paint a wall in a clearly elegant teal-ish color named “Mermaid Treasure.” Looking back, I can’t say it was the best choice, but it goes to show that my eye can’t help but gravitate towards the vibrant shades of blue/green bliss.

When working a separates look around a color, I like to keep the rest of the pieces in the neutral zone so it really stands out. Since the bandage skirt is obviously fitted, I balance it with a borrowed-from-the-boys button-down and buckled booties so the look isn’t overly sexy. For me, it’s all about creating that contrast between flirty and casual to get it right for all-day style.

And just because she’s so damn cute…a bonus Zoey shot.

Shirt: Beulah. Skirt: BCBGMAXAZRIA. Boots: Deena & Ozzy. Sunglasses: Gucci.
