Festival de Cannes: 12 days of fabulous-ness where celebrities and film industry insiders frolic in the French Riviera. Oh, and they also screen just-released and upcoming films and hand out all sorts of fancy awards.

But let’s be honest…Cannes is nothing without the fashion. “But Lisa K,” you may say, “twelve days of red carpet is a lot to keep up with!” Well not to worry. I’ll scour the internet, bring you the best look of the day, you decide if it’s a hit or miss. Deal? Let’s begin.

This week, fashion’s most influential people gathered under one extravagant roof at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, aka The Super Bowl of the fashion world. Yes there are the Academy Awards, but no other event can bring out the array of designers, editors, models, celebrities and style icons that the Met Gala does (my invitation must have been lost in the mail…). This year’s PUNK: Chaos to Couture theme was particularly relevant to the ’90s grunge trend that’s recently been popping up in stores and magazine spreads (in case you’re wondering, I’m into it).

As with any red carpet event, a list of Best and Worst Dressed attendees is a must.

  1. Anne Hathaway in Valentino. I think she came as Miley Cyrus, but she looks awesome.
  2. Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs. Her skater boy hair actually works for the event and the dress is perfection.
  3. Dakota Fanning in Rodarte
  4. Mary-Kate Olsen in a Chanel gown and vintage Balmain jacket. I know I’ll probably be fought on this one, but no one does homeless-chic better than Mary-Kate. It’s so perfectly PUNK.
  5. Gwen Stefani in Maison Martin Margiela. The quintessential punk chick looks flawless.
  6. Anja Rubik in Anthony Vaccarello
  7. Cara Delevingne in Burberry Psorsum
  8. Minka Kelly in Carolina Herrera
  9. Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy Haute Couture
  10. Nina Dobrev in Monique Lhuillier
  11. Hilary Rhoda in Wes Gordon
  12. Allison Williams in Altuzarra
  13. Elizabeth Banks in Atelier Versace: those shoes!

  1. Madonna in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. Stop acting like you’re 20 and put some pants on!
  2. Gwyneth Paltrow in Valentino. Apparently she missed the PUNK memo.
  3. Kate Upton in Diane von Furstenberg. BORING.
  4. Kim Kardashian in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. Her hair and makeup are lovely but the dress looks like a bedspread from grandma’s house.
  5. Nicki Minaj in Tommy Hilfiger. I expected more from Miss Minaj.
  6. Kristen Stewart in Stella McCartney. I don’t care if it is Stella, this jumpsuit is horribly unflattering.
  7. Jennifer Lawrence in Dior. This length is really tough to pull off, and the look is too polished and safe for the event.
  8. Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney. Aside from the belt, this look really ages her.

Mod, Mod World

Thanks to Mr. Marc Jacobs and his game-changing Louis Vuitton Spring 2013 show (yes those are escalators in the background…in a tent), fashion has set its sights on the mod movement and ’60s inspiration. Graphic lines, bold color contrasts and sleek structures are lining the racks and popping up in my inbox as summer gets closer and closer.

As with any runway trend, personal interpretation is key. Take the most important elements of the look and find something that works with your style. My choice? This black and white Zara top. The strong contrast and slightly flared silhouette are just the right amount of mod for me. Coupled with black skinnies and ankle-strap wedges, I’m able to take the tone of the trend and translate it into my own look.

From friends and coworkers to acquaintances and more, this is the most common fashion gripe I hear:

“I have individual pieces that I like but I don’t know how to put things together.”

When it comes to fashion, sometimes all you have to do to style a favorite new look is think outside the box. Whenever I’m stuck on what to wear, I focus in on one piece and build a look around it. I find that if I have one piece in mind, it’s easier for me to get creative than if I’m putting together something out of nothing.

Take a look in your closet and pick a piece that strikes your current mood. In this case, I chose the leather shorts. Now, using that piece as the foundation for the outfit, pick another piece that you have not yet paired it with. For me, it was the oversized denim shirt. I liked the idea of mixing sexy leather and utilitarian denim. I decided to add tights since this was a work look (I work in a creative industry so I have much more freedom than most when it comes to workwear) and the collar necklace to make it a little more dressy. To keep in line with the rocker appeal of the shorts, I had to lace up my trusty Litas.

Before I knew it, I had styled an entirely new look just from shopping in my closet and getting a little creative.

As we continue to linger in between cold and warm temps, I find myself mixing pieces from summer and winter to get by. While this vibrant silk maxi dress with side slits is usually reserved for May-September, I decided to layer it with an oversized faux-fur vest for an early 2013 debut.

Whether it’s the unexpected pairings of designer with fast fashion, casual with dressy or summer with winter, finding ways to mix up new looks keeps your style fresh and interesting. The only real rule is to break them all.

Back in Black

Saturday nights are made for showing off your style. This past weekend’s dinner-and-drinks plans presented the opportunity to slip on a little black dress and sweep on a smokey eye. The drop-waist dress is part of the design/blogger collaboration Elin Kling for Marciano (can you tell I have a thing for collabs?), and I already can’t wait to wear it again. The V-shaped neck and back plus the flirty flounce skirt make me feel feminine and a little sexy, and petite chevron detail adds a demure touch of texture. To show off the back, I decided to take a cue from girl of the moment, Jennifer Lawrence, and try out the back necklace.

Since I actually had time to spend on makeup, I went for a tried-and-true smokey eye coupled with soft pink lips (always choose one feature to play up and keep the rest toned down). A smudge of silver in the corner of my eyes really makes them pop.

What’s your go-to look for Saturday night?

High Drama

One fail-safe way to make any look over-the-top dramatic? An oversized faux-fur coat. I recently “borrowed” this one from my super-stylish mom (it won’t be getting returned anytime soon) and it’s been my go-to for making an impact and staying warm while we wait for the real spring to arrive.

I played up the rich eggplant color with bright floral leggings and fuchsia lips (the next big thing) and grounded the look with a chic black tunic. The result? More drama than the Bravo network.

Oscars Best & Worst

The dust has settled. The scandals have (sort of) subsided (did Ben get redemption by winning Best Picture?). And the winners have likely found a beautiful mantel to showcase their shiny golden Oscars.

One topic that’s still on everyone’s minds? THE FASHION. While the Academy Award winners will forever be remembered for their superb talent, the Best Dressed winners will forever be idolized by the fashion gods – an equally important accolade if you ask me.

Here are the ladies who received top honors in my eyes.

Oscars 2013 Best Dressed

Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta
Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta
Jane Fonda in Versace
Jane Fonda in Versace

Here’s why…

Charlize Theron: Fresh, structured and impeccable. Even the hair looks perfect.

Jennifer Lawrence: I love the fitted bodice and dramatic skirt. It feels like a modern fairytale and it fit her amazingly well.

Naomi Watts: So unique and very avant garde. I love the neckline and the gunmetal shimmer felt just shiny enough.

Amy Adams: The muted color felt so different and the detailing on the skirt is exquisite. I might be biased on this one because it looks ever-so-similar to my Vera Wang wedding dress, but I think Amy looks fantastic. oscarsphoto(5)

Jane Fonda: This one might come as a surprise, but the bright lemon color made such a bold statement on a carpet of mostly-dark hues, and the golden corseting shaped her figure perfectly. All in all, drop-dead gorgeous for a 75 year old (or a 25 year old for that matter!).

And, sadly, the ones who just didn’t get it right.

Oscars 2013 Worst Dressed

Helen Hunt in H&M
Helen Hunt in H&M
Anne Hathaway in Prada
Anne Hathaway in Prada
Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen
Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen
Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton
Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton

Here’s why…

Helen Hunt: I admire that you’re trying to make a statement for affordable fashion, but those wrinkles are just inexcusable.

Anne Hathaway: Terribly-exaggerated darts had everyone talking about your nipples rather than your winning performance. That neckline and necklace do not mix. The back looks sloppy. The whole look seems like an after-thought (which it kind of was since you had planned on Valentino up until a few hours before the show) but it’s still no excuse for a Best Supporting Actress winner.

Salma Hayek: I normally LOVE anything McQueen, and I might have liked this dress on its own, but the hair kills it. That up-do feels dated and cheesy.

Reese Witherspoon: The retro-style bra cups just look awkward and unflattering, and the dress is pulling at the hips.

What did you think of the Oscars red carpet? Do you agree with my picks?

Flashing My Brights

Stepping out of my black and neutrals comfort zone, I’ve been opening up to the world of color that fashion is currently offering, and I must say, I’m into it. This digital-print top is another piece from the Prabal Gurung for Target collection; the vibrant lime, ice blue and bursts of berry hues mix perfectly together. I love Prabal for grounding it with black trim and mesh panels so it doesn’t feel too sweet (as prints often can).

To top off the brights, I chose my new flash-mirrored aviators in orange. You might recognize them from my Spring Wants & Needs post. I couldn’t resist. They just feel so fresh for spring/summer and I can’t wait for beach days when they’ll really make a statement.

Have you been flashing your brights lately? Send me your looks on Twitter and Instagram, @herwritemind.

Color Me in LOVE

The latest designer collaboration at Target has launched, and I’m not only pleasantly surprised, I’m genuinely excited about it. I had high hopes for LOVE by Prabal Gurung from the first time I got a sneak peek of the online lookbook a few weeks back. The avant-garde prints and vibrant colors are a welcome reprieve from winter’s heavy knits and coats, and even though I’m not usually a print person, I was drawn to these. My online order arrived yesterday, just in time for a beautiful sunny and warm weekend.

While Target has put out their fair share of designer collabs in the past, I’m usually disappointed with the quality of the pieces. What looks amazing in an ad looks and feels cheap in real life, so I hardly ever end up buying into it.

But with Prabal, the fabrics and materials are by far the best I’ve experienced with a designer Target collection (at least the pieces that I ordered) and the prices are extremely reasonable. At just $39.99, this shirt-dress makes a fresh statement and feels so effortless. I decided to keep it casual by pairing it with flat sandals and minimal jewelry – it was a perfect look for a sunny day in LA. All the compliments I received seemed to prove me right.
