This morning I was introduced to a brand new tumblr page that I know is going to be huge: Menswear Dog.

I know what you’re thinking, “I’ve seen dressed up dogs before…so what?” Well, Menswear Dog is different. Instead of wearing overpriced, unoriginal doggy clothes, this three year old Shiba Inu named Bodhi wears true menswear. Like human menswear. Like vintage coats and Ben Sherman shirts. So simple but so brilliant!

Instantly I was hooked on its winning combination of two of my favorite things: fashion and dogs. The owners manage to capture Bodhi’s almost human-like personality in their ridiculously cute photos, and the styling offers some true inspiration for the guys.

Menswear Dog, consider me obsessed.

I’ve met someone. He’s dark, handsome and different than most of the guys out there. What’s even better, is that he gets me. He knows how to make me happy. It’s like we were made for each other.

Don’t worry, the hubby knows what’s going on. We can’t keep secrets from one another. In fact, he’s the one who brought Diego home not long ago for my birthday…and Diego has faithfully been by my side ever since. He’s like the missing link that my wardrobe always wished for. His shape? Unique. His pebbled leather? Soft yet rugged. His rose-gold studs? Undeniably cool. He has that certain rockstar appeal that you know I find irresistible. Once I saw this bag, I knew I had to have it, and thanks to the hubby, now I do.

Thank you to Alexander Wang for dreaming up and creating my handbag soulmate. We’re going to be very happy together.

Is it just me, or is everything at Zara #totesamaze right now? The last few times I’ve been in there, I find myself wishing they had shopping carts because my arms are hurting from carrying around all my fab finds. I’ve always been a fan of the European-born chain, but I’d maybe buy one or two things a season. This season is on another level.

For their Fall/Winter 2012 Collection, they have definitely stepped up their game in the design and production departments. There are so many things I want that I could easily spend an entire paycheck there in one afternoon. Their quality has also improved quite a bit, and while that has slightly driven up some of the price points, the product is so appealing that I don’t mind. It still gives you designer-worthy looks at a fraction of the price. So I say go ahead…indulge.

Trend to Try: Nail Wraps

Whether you’re a devoted gel mani-wearer or a do-it-yourself polisher, expressive nails are a natural accessory to your style. When I have a fresh mani and pedi, I feel like I can take on the world. Plus, since nail color is a only a one or two week commitment, it’s the perfect outlet to experiment with trends.

Enter the latest of nail decorating-trends…nail wraps. More like stickers than polish, wraps are easy to apply and offer intricate designs that even the most talented polish-artist could never create. Leopard print? Houndstooth? Polka dots? All at your fingertips. Literally.

I was recently introduced to ncLA Nail Wraps and was such a fan that I wanted to spread the word. As someone who’s a challenged self-painter, the sticker application was fairly easy and left both of my hands looking flaunt-able. Plus, ncLA has designer-inspired patterns (Missoni, anyone?) that give you a truly chic look.

Step 1 – Prep:

I’m a firm believer that the trimming and filing are just as important as the color application, so that’s always the starting point. Starting with clean, naked nails, soak both hands in luke-warm water for a few minutes, then massage a tiny bit of oil or lotion into the nailbeds. Gently push back your cuticles with the tool and trim the excess skin with cuticle nippers. Cut your nails to the desired length then file to shape and smooth them out. Wash your hands with soap to remove the oil/lotion so the wraps can stick.

Step 2 – Wrap:

To apply the wraps, start with a clear coat of polish. Find the best size for each nail and smooth it on starting at the cuticle. I found I had to stretch the sides a bit to completely cover my nails, but once you get the hang of it, you can move pretty quickly. To remove the extra length, you simply file in a downwards motion and it comes right off. Once you’ve applied them all, seal with another clear coat and you’re good to go! The only dry-time is for the top coat…so fetch.

Step 3 – Flaunt:

One of the best shopping sites just earned more points in my book with their short film, “Launch Pad.” A cute take on how they deliver fashion straight to your door (or through it), the cast is quite impressive. Look for cameos from designers like Thakoon and Rachel Zoe plus bloggers like The Man Repeller herself, Leandra. I love brands that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Watch the video then check out their latest offerings, including an awesome sale section!

Listen – “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes

It’s pretty rare that I really like a song the first time I hear it. Usually I need a few listens to make a connection and really get into it. For me, not loving a song at first listen could be for any of the following reasons:

1. I enjoy singing along, and if I don’t know the lyrics, then I can’t sing along very well.

2. Sometimes a song just needs time to grow on me. At first, I’m unsure, but after I hear it a few times it starts to click.

3. I actually don’t like the song at all. The only reason why I start “liking” it is because I hear it everywhere I go and it’s too damn catchy to ignore. When the same song is played over and over in the car, at work, at stores and in commercials, eventually it will wear you down. First you won’t be able to stop singing it and before you know it you’re filming your own version of “Call Me Maybe” (which I will neither confirm nor deny that I myself have done).

But with “Hold On” by newcomers the Alabama Shakes, I was immediately drawn to it. There’s something familiar, almost nostalgic feeling about this song, yet it also feels different than anything I’ve heard before. Could it be the soulful, folk-sounding voice of lead singer Brittany Howard? Or the heavy slapping of the bass by Zac Cockrell? I’m not exactly sure, but I know I’m into it.

What do you think of it? Let me know in the comments.

Branding Lesson: The Commercial That Made Me Like Sears

09 Thursday Aug 2012

Sears is known for a lot of things, fashion is not one of them. Every Kardashian (and every Jenner) could have her own line there (and I’m sure we’ll see a Kendall/Kylie for Sears line soon), and I still wouldn’t shop there. I’m sorry but I’m not sorry – it’s the truth. However, as someone who understands the importance of brand image and knows how difficult re-branding can be, I have to say this new Sears commercial is spot on.

First of all, NOTHING ABOUT IT makes you think it’s Sears. A young couple on a beach, running around without a care in the world…it feels more Quicksilver/American Eagle/Free People for the first 18 seconds. Second, the catchy song by Chappo supports that free-spirited image. And lastly, it has a major sense of humor. Young, catchy and comical. No sane person would use those words to describe Sears. While one commercial does not a brand image change, it definitely got my attention, which is a tough first step.

But I’m still not shopping there.

Song: “Come Home” by Chappo

WATCH: AMC’s Breaking Bad

AMC, breaking bad, show, tv

If you’re not already a fan, you’ve surely heard of it. It’s the endearing, surprisingly not-so-outrageous story of a high school chemistry teacher faced with terminal lung cancer. Instead of focusing on his treatment, he turns to cooking meth to make quick money so he can leave his family with a comfortable financial situation when he dies. In his mission to care for his family as he faces his imminent death, Walter White quickly climbs the ranks of the drug world due to his premium product — the most pure meth anyone’s ever seen.

With its truly engaging and original story, Breaking Bad takes you on Walter’s transformation from nerdy chem teacher to a powerful, in-demand drug manufacturer who will stop at nothing leave his family in a good place. Bryan Cranston leads the cast of ridiculously talented actors into the fifth and final season of the series that begins Sunday, July 15.

Make some space on your DVR to record season 5 while you watch the first four seasons on Netflix. Its addictive nature will have you caught up in no time.
