An Open Letter (Plea) to Donald Trump

09 Wednesday Nov 2016

Dear Mr. Trump,

Congratulations on your victory. The American people have spoken, and while I did not support you, I do believe in our democracy so I will respect the outcome of this election. My frustration is passing, my denial is lifting and as difficult as it feels at this moment, I’ve decided that all I can do is have hope for the future, and write to say what I believe.

I will not say that the election was rigged because the candidate I supported lost. I will not call you names and I will not throw insults at you in an attempt to tear you down. I will not do that, because not only would that be childish, it would be un-American. And despite the fact that you did all of those things time and time again throughout your campaign and still managed to win, I refuse to believe that makes them right.

When I turned off the election coverage last night I went to bed sick to my stomach. The results were not final, but it was clear what was coming. I tossed and turned in bed wanting desperately to reach for my phone to check for updates but I resisted. I resisted in part because I wanted to hold on to a glimmer of hope, and in part because I knew if I looked and discovered the truth, I wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep.

Even though I already knew what I would see when I woke up, I wasn’t prepared for the emotions triggered by the results. As I lay in bed, reading article after article in an attempt to understand how and why this happened, I began to cry. Not just for myself, but for all Americans, for all children and for all of the world.

You see Mr. Trump, not only does the President lead our country, he serves as a symbol—a symbol of hope, courage, freedom and inspiration. The world is watching you, Mr. Trump, and that is why I cry. I feel ashamed that I will have to explain to my young niece and nephews that just because our President calls people “losers,” it doesn’t mean they can do the same. Ashamed that when I travel to other countries I’ll have to explain that just because I am an American, it doesn’t mean that I’m ignorant or that I believe in discriminating against immigrants based on their religion. Ashamed that one day I’ll have to explain to my own children that just because our President judges a woman’s worth based on her appearance, that doesn’t make it right.

I want to live in an America that values acceptance, equality and kindness. As of this morning, I fear that we have regressed back into prejudice, divisiveness and hate. This is why I plead with you, Mr. Trump: be mindful of your words and your actions. Please understand that you are no longer responsible for just yourself and your company—you are now responsible for an entire nation and we’re counting on you. Words are powerful, and every word you speak, type or Tweet will represent America and will be heard by the entire world. I hope with every ounce of my being that you take that to heart. Political campaigns tend to bring out the worst in a person, and I can only trust that the dangerous rhetoric you’ve used over the past two years can now shift into messages that are worthy of this most precious and powerful position you’ve been elected to—the highest position in the land and arguably the world.

Your outrageous comments and the candid manner in which you “tell it like it is” may have won over some voters, but if any other traditional candidate made just one of the hundreds of incredibly offensive remarks you made, their bid would have ended long ago. It’s often said that celebrities are above the law, and your campaign proved that to be true.

Make no mistake, Mr. Trump, many Americans voted for you not because they like you or even agree with you, but because they want change and they’re willing to take it at any cost. They feel that D.C. is broken, and I tend to agree. However, your victory should not and does not validate your behavior on the campaign trail. It does not give you license to continue to put others down or call them a “dummy,” “clown” or “liar” if they disagree with you. A true leader recognizes that he doesn’t know it all and that he isn’t always right. A true leader understands that conflict brings forth the opportunity for growth. A true leader listens to others and considers their opinions because he understands that is how we progress.

I was shocked to hear you say in your victory speech that you want to meet with the people who didn’t support you so that you can understand their points of view—that is probably the most encouraging thing I’ve heard you say in your entire campaign, and I truly hope it foreshadows a more tolerant and accepting tone for your Presidency.

I’m well aware that in the excruciatingly small chance you actually read this letter, I will be dismissed as a “wacky nobody” or a “sore loser,” and if that’s what you want to think then so be it. But I am still an American and you will still be my President, so I implore you to take this plea into consideration as you lead me and the millions of others of Americans who believe that we are a nation that treats each other with respect; one where all men, women and children are created equal.

Please be a President whose words and actions will make us proud.

Best regards,

Lisa Konen

We’ll Always Have Paris

Twinkling trees along the magnificent Champs Elysees, glimmering cityscapes from atop the Arc de Triomphe, hourly sparkles from La Tour Eiffel… The City of Light definitely earns its moniker, and it shines even brighter during the holidays. After only three days, we fell under the magic spell of Paris and its… je ne sais quoi. From leisurely meals at any hour to indulgent pastries on every corner (made with REAL SUGAR and REAL BUTTER!), Parisians sure know how to enjoy life, and we overstimulated Americans can learn a thing or two about their outlook.

While there were so many special moments that left us awestruck, I’ve narrowed it down to a few favorites. Enjoy!

Hello and Happy New Year to all! I hope that each of you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season filled with family, friends, love and laughter. As we are thrust into 2014, I can’t help but feel a sense of disbelief (and slight panic) at another year gone.

Since we aren’t getting any younger and there’s so much to see in the world, the hubby and I decided to take a mini Euro trip right before the holidays. Our itinerary included 10 days split between London, Paris and Amsterdam.

First, some highlights from the fascinating, charming, historically-rich city of London…enjoy!

Chapter 4: The Tower of London

This royal palace and fortress held the executions of many a famous Englanders including King Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. Guarded over by Yeoman Warders (also known as Beefeaters – where the gin got its name), the Tower is the home of The Crown Jewels and served as the residence to Kings and Queens for nearly 500 years. Its brutal yet fascinating history is superceded only by its impressive architecture and still-fully-functioning role in the modern British monarchy.

Long & Short

Please accept my apologies for my hiatus the past few weeks. Busy weeks fed into busier weekends and before I knew it September had come and gone (and then half of October!).

While I was away from blog land, I decided to go even shorter with my hair. I can’t get enough of this messy long bob look. With celebs like Jennifer Lawrence and Heidi Klum also going for the chop this year, I can’t help but think I started a trend. Ok, I might be reaching, but it’s a fun thought. This cut makes me feel confident, in vogue and refreshed—I’ll be keeping it around for a while.

To debut my shorter ‘do, I chose a long flowing skirt to create a stylish juxtaposition. I kept the look simple by pairing the skirt with a vintage cami and sky-high platforms, and added a textured skinny belt to break it up a bit. The result? Effortless chic for day or night.

Santa Monica Ride

One of my favorite LA activities is renting beach cruisers and riding along the boardwalk from colorful Venice Beach to the bustling Santa Monica pier. Up-close views of the Pacific mixed with always-entertaining people watching guarantees an experience to remember (and out-of-town visitors will have a blast).

Stopping for lunch and a drink on Main Street gives you a chance to refuel before you head back down. Beautiful way to spend a summer day!

Style tip: wear shorts (or a romper) and non-flip-flop sandals for riding ease

Picture this: A heartfelt, touching ceremony set against a beautiful Italian villa-style desert backdrop followed by an epic night of dancing, celebrating and an all-night after party with more dance moves than Britney in her hey day. As I told the bride in the middle of the reception, I think it’s safe to say the wedding was a success.

Congrats to Laurie and Chris and thanks for a fabulous weekend!

Watch: Dove Real Beauty Sketches

25 Thursday Apr 2013

advertising, beauty, dove beauty sketches video, dove real beauty, dove real beauty sketches, dove sketch video, dove video, marketing, new dove video

I was forwarded this video with the simple instruction “Watch” and nothing else. Having no idea what to expect, I obeyed.

What followed on the screen was a short video that resonated deep inside—a place where I (and I’m sure many other women) don’t visit very often. As tears welled up in my eyes, it came as no surprise to see that the video had garnered 28 million views in less than two weeks.

Please take three minutes to watch it for yourself. I’ll pick up the conversation at the bottom of the post.

Now, of course this video has its critics, people claiming it only promotes outer beauty and that the first sketch is deemed unattractive. There are also those who say that, while the video might be nice, at the end of the day Dove is a brand owned by a large parent company, and that company is looking to increase its bottom line (just like any other) by selling what else? Beauty products.

I agree that with every marketing campaign, you have to keep in mind that there is a brand behind it hoping to reap the benefits of the emotional connection they worked to establish, but Dove has placed emphasis on “real beauty” for years now. This campaign is not out of left field or just a one-off strategy that will be abandoned by the next fiscal quarter. Through various advertising and marketing campaigns that feature “real women” instead of models, Dove has established credibility with promoting self-esteem, confidence and a healthy body image. They truly seem dedicated to helping women overcome insecurities. Of course they’re hoping they will see an increase in sales, but for me, that doesn’t take away from the beauty of the experiment.

As for the argument that this campaign once again only promotes outer beauty, I don’t think that perception could be further off. It’s about the fact that we as women are so self critical that we literally have distorted visions of what we look like (not unlike a person suffering from anorexia). If you listen to the stranger’s descriptions, they mention “…her eyes lit up when she smiled,” which clearly shows the connection between inner happiness and beauty. Nowhere in the video is a “standard of beauty” established or referenced. These women are clearly not supermodels or A-list actresses, but they are all beautiful in their own ways and should realize it. To me, THAT is the point.

What do you guys think? What was your reaction? Do you agree or disagree with the critics? This is such a relevant topic and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Oscars Best & Worst

The dust has settled. The scandals have (sort of) subsided (did Ben get redemption by winning Best Picture?). And the winners have likely found a beautiful mantel to showcase their shiny golden Oscars.

One topic that’s still on everyone’s minds? THE FASHION. While the Academy Award winners will forever be remembered for their superb talent, the Best Dressed winners will forever be idolized by the fashion gods – an equally important accolade if you ask me.

Here are the ladies who received top honors in my eyes.

Oscars 2013 Best Dressed

Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta
Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta
Jane Fonda in Versace
Jane Fonda in Versace

Here’s why…

Charlize Theron: Fresh, structured and impeccable. Even the hair looks perfect.

Jennifer Lawrence: I love the fitted bodice and dramatic skirt. It feels like a modern fairytale and it fit her amazingly well.

Naomi Watts: So unique and very avant garde. I love the neckline and the gunmetal shimmer felt just shiny enough.

Amy Adams: The muted color felt so different and the detailing on the skirt is exquisite. I might be biased on this one because it looks ever-so-similar to my Vera Wang wedding dress, but I think Amy looks fantastic. oscarsphoto(5)

Jane Fonda: This one might come as a surprise, but the bright lemon color made such a bold statement on a carpet of mostly-dark hues, and the golden corseting shaped her figure perfectly. All in all, drop-dead gorgeous for a 75 year old (or a 25 year old for that matter!).

And, sadly, the ones who just didn’t get it right.

Oscars 2013 Worst Dressed

Helen Hunt in H&M
Helen Hunt in H&M
Anne Hathaway in Prada
Anne Hathaway in Prada
Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen
Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen
Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton
Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton

Here’s why…

Helen Hunt: I admire that you’re trying to make a statement for affordable fashion, but those wrinkles are just inexcusable.

Anne Hathaway: Terribly-exaggerated darts had everyone talking about your nipples rather than your winning performance. That neckline and necklace do not mix. The back looks sloppy. The whole look seems like an after-thought (which it kind of was since you had planned on Valentino up until a few hours before the show) but it’s still no excuse for a Best Supporting Actress winner.

Salma Hayek: I normally LOVE anything McQueen, and I might have liked this dress on its own, but the hair kills it. That up-do feels dated and cheesy.

Reese Witherspoon: The retro-style bra cups just look awkward and unflattering, and the dress is pulling at the hips.

What did you think of the Oscars red carpet? Do you agree with my picks?
